SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse is a Platinum Super Low Energy (SLE) certified sports and recreational development that has also received the Whole Life Carbon and Health & Wellbeing badges under the Building and Construction Authority’s Green Mark 2021 (GM2021) scheme in Singapore. Environmentally-driven and wellbeing-focused, its architectural scheme is guided by DPA’s Attributes of Purposeful Design (APD) framework which included a whole life carbon assessment (WCLA) conducted at planning stage.
By enabling our architects to make informed design decisions, significant operational and embodied carbon savings were achieved. SGBC 2-tick concrete and recycled structural steel were used during construction, reducing carbon emissions per GFA by 23%. The implementation of Photovoltaics panels supplies renewable energy, offsetting 10% of the annual building energy consumption. This is complemented by the employment of energy-efficient systems such as variable voltage, variable frequency lift and water-cooled chiller, and smart controls that contribute to 40% annual energy saving while creating a personalised indoor environment.
Additionally, climatic response study allows for the design to leverage site and environmental advantages for maximum sustainable outcomes. The orientation and layout of the clubhouse are optimised to simultaneously harvest daylight and self-shade, creating a comfortable public plaza and common spaces outdoors. Natural ventilation is also prioritised through building porosity with openings towards prevailing South and Southeast wind while services and non-air-conditioned spaces located along the East- and West-facing façade are fitted with high performance glass to reduce heat-gain for optimal indoor comfort.
The performance-based design is also crucial for informing optimal placement of landscaping and the building’s programming. The swimming pool and futsal court, for example, are unconventionally located on the second floor which not only offers outstanding views out to the surrounding park. It, more importantly, allows for engagement in sports and exercise regardless of rain or shine; thereby, fulfilling SAFRA CCK Clubhouse’s primary objective of promoting a health-centred lifestyle among its end-users.
