Yong Siew Onn and principal engineer (formerly with Bescon), Er. Ho Shuey Yng.

Beyond the spotlight of this year’s BCA Awards ceremony at the annual International Built Environment Week (IBEW), the accolade affirms three things that have always anchored our practice and purpose at DP Sustainable Design. They are: 1) the power of collaboration among built environment professionals and stakeholders, 2) the capacity of an interdisciplinary approach for innovative solutions and high impact outcomes, and 3) the possibilities that can be achieved when challenges and context are viewed through a life-centred lens. The three components, in tandem, enables advocacy and action to meaningfully come together and realise a better-than-sustainable future.

The Greenhouse at Dulwich College (Singapore), being the nation’s first net-zero private institution under BCA’s Green Mark 2021, is exemplary of this. Its design brief was radical in its call for a learning environment that would nurture a future generation of eco-conscious leaders and equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to make an impact. Sharing in this vision, we conducted whole building energy modelling and environment-responsive building simulations, deriving data that informed architectural design decisions and guided our sustainable design strategies. Employed synergistically and through collaborative effort alongside the architects, engineers, façade and interior designers, we delivered a truly climate-positive school development in which sustainability education is authentic, accessible and applicable for students.

Reflecting on the award win, our director Er. Yong Siew Onn expressed, “It is our hope that sustainability achievements of The Greenhouse at Dulwich College (Singapore), in alignment with this year’s theme at IBEW – Solving for Tomorrow, Today, will inspire further conversations and encourage deeper collaborations for sustainability in the built environment.”

The Project of the Year Award is organised annually by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore and aims to honour projects that demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence and advancing Singapore’s Built Environment industry practices. These range from sustainability and collaboration to digitalisation and productivity. The award ceremony was held at the three-day IBEW conference, organised by BCA International, a subsidiary of BCA driving sustainable built environment initiatives and which saw a turn-out of over 9,000 attendees.
