The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)’s academic campus was featured in Issue 75 of Cubes magazine, in an article that focused on how the seamless articulation of spaces and corridors helped to promote interaction and dynamism.
The article highlighted a unique part of the campus design – at SUTD, blocks are not dedicated to specific disciplines unlike most traditional tertiary institutions. Instead, disciplines and functions are mixed throughout the blocks, fostering better communication and interactivity among the students and faculty. This, combined with an architectural emphasis on lateral and vertical links, results in “an environment that nurtures the pedestrian with the sense of an ongoing journey”.
The article further touched on how the architects were conscious in responding to the local tropical climate, such as through the strategic orientation of blocks to minimise east-west solar exposure, a porous ground floor that enhances updraughts and allow spaces to be cooled, as well as horizontal louvres that reduce solar gain while shielding external corridors from rain.
